A bit of both. There is a large cut through the skull. This means his frontal lobe, and importantly the prefrontal cortex, have been likely been damaged.
So he has lost the ‘human’ part of his mind, giving the impression of Zen. Really he is like a chimpanzee toddler in his mind.
I can’t see him living long with that injury in that part of the world. Even if he was somewhere with amazing health care, he would be a drooling psych ward patient after this. So death would be a better option anyway.
