Thoughts on selective empathy?

Me too, that's why this subject confuses me so much. I'm a very helpful and caring person in general, it's almost like I feel the need to help someone get better but as soon they show me that they don't care, then I really can't get myself to care either.

That's why I'm curious on the subject. I find my feelings on it confusing. 😐 Of course it depends on the relationship I have with the person. for example I recently worked a recovery program helping newly sober addicts with paperwork, applications, ect... I really did care about helping these people better their lives but after repeatedly just taking advantage of the program and resources and just showing no desire to get better, it became more than easy to write that person off completely.
