During the latter part of 2014 and into early 2015, Ukraine forces and pro-Russian fighters (the DNR) fought a deadly battle for control of the Donetsk Airport.
The pro-Russian fighters (backed up by Russian soldiers and equipment) outnumbered and outgunned the Ukraine soldiers holed up in the destroyed airport. Ukraine defenders were hammered day and night with artillery, grads and tank fire by the DNR forces.
One Ukraine soldier who survived the daily bombardment mentioned that the pro-Russians would drive a tank straight up to the ruins of the airport and fire off two or three rounds point blank into the destroyed airport. By the time that the Ukraine soldiers could respond the tank was gone, only for another one to drive up and do the same thing on the other side of the airport a few hours later.
The Ukraine soldiers were low on ammunition, rations and rest. They had no air, tank or artillery support and no relief forces. So they dug in and fought off numerous DNR attacks.
News about these doomed Ukraine soldiers soon reached the Ukraine media. The Ukraine people began to call them "Cyborgs" because of their ability to fight off numerous attacks in order to hold the airport.
