Ukrainian civilians attempted to flee as Russian forces moved into their area but a number of them were shot and killed in their vehicles and some on foot along their only escape route, on the Zhytomyr highway. Involved in these civilian deaths/shootings was one of two battalion-tactical groups from the 5th Tank Brigade of the Russian Army.
One group took up a position in the village of Berezivka in the Buchansk district while the second set up at a gas station near the village of Myla, also in the Bucha district, along the Zhytomyr Highway (between the villages of Mriia and Myla and officially known as the M06 highway; part of the E40 highway system).

It was the second battalion-tactical group from the 5th Tank Brigade that allegedly committed the most shootings and murders of civilians along the Zhytomyr highway. Russian tanks and soldiers were stationed behind the gas station, near and opposite it, blocking traffic in both directions.
The two Russian groups had entered the Ukraine from Belarus on March 3, 2022, heading in the direction of Kyiv. From March 4 to 25, the Russian military shot at 10 civilian vehicles, killing13 people died and injuring six.

Suspicion has been announced to the commander of the 5th separate tank brigade, who directed the cold-blooded shooting of a convoy of civilians. Investigators identified and set up a photo database of 400 Russian servicemen who committed war crimes in the Kyiv region.
“And we are talking only about those people who were driving cars. We already have evidence of the killing of civilians in nearby settlements, as well as those who tried to walk past Russian combat positions,” the head of the investigating team Oleksandr Klymovkyi said.
