Hitler was right about Russia being a menace but it's military had just had the purges and Stalin had fucked it up as much as he could. So it was weak but it was not that weak that, with the threat of actual invasion, Stalin could save face by getting the Commisars out of the way and letting the General staff get on with what they knew best.

If Hitler had been smart and not so driven by self defeating ideology, kind of like we are now doing with our western obsession with 'global warming', he could have sat back for a few years and really built up an 'Eastern Wall' to keep the fuckers out.
