Dogs see us as part of their pack. In a safe and functional pack we are the alphas and the dogs know this and each dog has their place.
They want us there to play our role. Then everyone is happy and calm.
Each time I come home from an outing my dogs used to rush over to me, barking and madly wagging their tails. I had a pack of 3 staffies. Each had their place in the pecking order with the humans on top and my wife as pack leader. They all tried to sit on her lap as this was the ultimate power play.
It was hilarious the way they manipulated it to get on her. If not her then me as second best option.
When I've been away for a while, like a month or so over seas, they go crazy when I get back. The pack is very important to them.
But when dog becomes unwell or old then the power plays start. The upcomming pack leader sits on the sick dogs head or tries to hump it or bumps into it on purpose. They want the weak one to go away and die so the pack stays strong and lean. It's the unpleasant reality of dog life.
I'm just down to one dog now, our dominant bitch Ruby. She's become very needy as an only dog and we're getting a Jack Russel next month or so to give her another dog to play with.
Fur mommies who see dogs as their children set up a dangerous dynamic. Without clear alpha leadership dogs will attempt to dominate humans, and can bite and maul. When you look at your funny poches mouth take a good look at those teeth. They can, if they want, rip your throat out. They don't because we are dominant. Fur mommies are fucked up. It's not cute what they do it's dangerous and fucked.

Absolutely. I wasn't gone a year, but 10 months and he instantly recognised me walking in the door. Whether it was by sight, smell or voice I don't know.
i've had horses, dogs, cats, goats and even cows recognize me after periods of years...

My chickens come to my call of 'chook chook chook' at a flat out run, flapping their wings like crazy to speed up! They let me know if food is low too. They communicate very well.
I buried my dog had close bond with in yard I moved away from it sucks to think she's alone with strangers.
My wife used my birthday as a reason to buy a 2k Cavapoo. She didn’t get slapped or anything
We miss them when they go and then all their shit is forgiven. Like shitting on the floor, tearing up their new special pet bed, killing the kittens etc etc.
