Bouncing Betty
Lurker
I work in a long term care home for veterans in a dementia unit, surrounded by people who spent their lives serving their country and the people they loved. I am surrounded by suffering daily. I see the families suffering too. If you’ve been in the position to watch someone you love suffer the fate of dementia slowly progressing to a point they forget how to eat and starve, you know. I often think of how if there was an option for these people to go out with agency, at a time they got to decide, without pain and suffering, and with a proper goodbye to their loved ones, I think they would have taken it. I’m relieved taboos around assisted suicide are diminishing because it gives me hope that people like us won’t suffer this way when we’re all old.
