Thoughts on selective empathy?

Antisocial behaviour is a spectrum like anything else. Now it depends what other symptoms/traits it’s associated with that could make u a “psychopath”. It also gets weird and confusing if u have other Shit going on other disorders and such … but yea selective empathy and antisocial personality disorder can go hand in hand , depending on the case and circumstances ofc. I personally kind of experience it I learned empathy through therapy and healing and atm I do have selective empathy which I’m planning to “extend” or like atleast act accordingly cause once u experience what empathy is like u kind of get addicted to the feeling of feeling connected and grounded as a human. Ye that’s my take on it lols
Familial empathy. And sociopaths and psychopaths can experience aspects of empathy but it's often manufactured and used where there are voids - it's an assumption of empathy if you like which can be switched off and on. It's an understanding of what the other person feels without necessarily experiencing it personally

I reckon reckon reaction to kids duress is evolutionary, more noteworthy in females. Ambivalence to child harm is more common in men, again I think due to the evolutionary influence which I won't go into now as will be too long. Animals, probs because they've potentially never caused you harm and therefore you aren't emotionally barricaded and distanced from to protect yourself like you would be with human adults. Animals don't deserve duress as they are innocent. Apart from sharks, those fuckers are bastards.
Couldn’t have said it better

There's a difference between caring and knowing when you should care because it's socially appropriate. I used to not feel empathy for almost anybody except for about two specific people. But then after the first time I did shrooms I actually started feeling empathy for a lot of things. I guess my life is better now socially, but it's given me more emotional problems than if I continued without general empathy. :cartman:

(This is my first post so apologies if it isn't in the right place)
I've read a bit about so called "selective empathy" and am very curious to hear others opinions. I feel this is a good place to ask. I don't know if I believe in the idea that it's unique, seeing as in many situations I believe everyone has a different level of empathy towards different things. Some articles say it's a sign of a psychopath, but it is said a psychopath has no empathy at all. I find it very interesting how a person, including myself, can have very little to no feeling at all when it comes to strangers being hurt or dying, or hurting someone else, but can't handle seeing someone they care for, or more commonly a child or animal in distress. I feel like alot of people I've seen on websites such as this have the same reaction when it comes to seeing animal/child abuse. The stimga of these sites is that we are all sick and twisted, but I've seen some of the most caring people in places like this. Some of the most empathetic people I've ever met, have done some of the sickest things. I guess I'm just curious how many people believe in selective empathy. I'm still doing research because I can't figure out if I believe it's real or just a bunch of over thought medical nonsense. 🤔🧐
Grown adults are anything but innocent. Children and animals are

selective empathy? what bullshit community college did you attend OP?

This is selective empathy: you know that Basketball American kid on worldvision ads that is dying with a vulture waiting to eat his delicious, moist eyeballs? filed under not my fucking problem as I change the channel to MasterChef, where I am overcome with emotion because Karen burned the edges of her lasagne and she's been voted out. Get fucked cunt.

I genuinely love all of this comment 😂

I cant speak to selective empathy but psychopaths absolutely do feel empathy, they just dont feel it the same way “normal” people do (by normal i mean anyone without a massive mental problem that inhibits their ability to feel emotions or think rationally)

Psychopaths regularly start families and truly care about them, like they can go and chop each body part off a stranger without ever thinking a thing of it, but if their kid falls or otherwise gets hurt they rush to help and feel genuine concern (rarely is it shown normally though)

This is from very new studies as for most of the time we knew what psychopaths were we just assumed they couldnt feel it or that it was a massive abnormality when they did. When its actually common.

I think you mean sociopath. There are plenty of sociopaths here. True psychopaths are rare diamonds.

no I mean psychopaths, they did studies on people in rikers and people who actually got out and stayed out, they also did a few other studies but i cant recall where the subjects were obtained. its just a very abstract empathy

That is very true. This is the kind of response that makes you really think about the the question. 🤔

Empathy is always selective. Nobody is going to feel empathy for everyone for everything...

Here it is explained quite well.

like richard kuklinski. aka "the ice man",for instance.

Empathy also seems to oscillate between a person’s firm set of values and how someone may be feeling that day. For me it’s in a constant state of evolving…or over the past few years…dissolving. Selective empathy has always existed. For some more than others. Ask anyone who worked the medical field during Covid. I don’t cry anymore when we lose people.

The reaction you explained is normal most people think we are sick because they live sheltered lives I got into things like this from studying and preparing myself for career paths I was taking I wanted to be an EMT for a while and ended up doing something a little more intense, but most people on here are realists we live and we understand seeing this disensitizes us to the real world the difference between me and a person who thinks I'm a sick freak is, if someone got shot I would immediately move to apply pressure to the wound and find out where the wound is and how lethal it is and the people who r sheltered and think I'm sick freak out crack under pressure or pull out their phone so that begs the question who is really sick. We have different amounts of empathy for certain things empathy is more around what u know and your ability to put yourself in that person's place even some serial killers have empathy sometimes, not for victims, but say they watch a kid living the same horrible childhood they had they know the feeling and have the ability to show empathy towards that; but sympathy they lack they don't feel bad for people. I think what your looking for more is the differences between empathy and sympathy. Just wondering if this helped in any way.
I feel.... like I regret writing paragraphs oof. Is the 10 post thing real?
