A train accident occurred at a level crossing near Meteren in the Betuwe region. Around 11:00 a.m., a train collided with a truck. ProRail reports extensive damage and that emergency services are on site.

Train service between Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch has been halted. Five passengers sustained minor injuries, the safety region reports. These include passengers and the driver of the truck that was hit at the level crossing on Bredestraat.

The spokesperson said that emergency services are now evacuating the train passengers. The Dutch Railways (NS) reports on its website that approximately two hundred people were on the train. Earlier, the carrier had reported a total of five hundred passengers. Passengers are being taken to a nearby station by evacuation buses.

The Dutch Railways (NS) expects train service between Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch to resume only after the evening rush hour. There will also be fewer intercity trains running between Utrecht-Geldermalsen, Utrecht-Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA, and 's-Hertogenbosch-Eindhoven.

The Dutch Safety Board reports that three people will conduct an exploratory investigation into the train accident.
