Nixon on South American tour in 58’. Last country is Venezuela, where they recently disposed a guy the US had supported. Crowd attacks his motorcade enroute to US embassy. The resistant glass of his vehicle and Secret Service detail are last thing keeping Nixon from being killed. Secret service ready to start firing, and Nixon tells them to hold fire. The motorcade then starts moving and they get out of there. Eisenhower sends aircraft carrier, destroyers, and amphibious carriers the next day. Insane! I can’t believe I never heard this. Anyone familiar?

Nixon saw a heroes welcome when he came home. Standing ovations as cool-headed throughout. A high point for him and the implication is it helped him start his presidential run. I can’t believe somebody didn’t think this was a bad idea
