movies Last Movie You Watched..

Brightburn

Five big stars. Fantastic original concept. What happens in the Superman coming of age story if he turns into a ruthless sociopath just as he's learning his powers at age 12. Several moments of excellent gore. You'll love it in IMAX.

Aladdin

3 stars. Will Smith is decent of you can forget about the OG Robin Williams. Which you just can't... Special effects are great, music is good if you enjoyed watching it with your kids. Take your children or grandchildren, they'll love it.

Tormented(2015) 7/10 solid slant on "The Strangers" movie. 3/4 that is. kinda falls apart near the end though. A bit of a slowburner. Still worth a watch.

Another round of first run movies for me tonight.

Ma

2 of 5 stars. It's only original because our killer is a chubby black lady. Very little lol moments, predictable for the most part. Teenagers get alcohol bought for them by Ma, who then invites them to her basement "so you don't have to drive around" Obsessions and recriminations follow. Meh....

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

2.5 of 5 stars

Color me shocked, when, in 2019, the director decided to stick to the principle of ALL Godzilla movies for the past 50 years. A hot mess of a plot and lots of special effects. I mean, the plot is so bad. The acting is so so, even though there is some decent talent involved. Eleven from Stranger Things is one of the leads.
So here you go: Humans release monsters for the most dubious of reasons, monsters fight in cities. I don't think I have to tell you who wins. Special effects are state of the art and the sound is so loud as to be a distraction from the film. Maybe I'd have enjoyed it more stoned.

Poetry. 2011. South Korea.
10/10.
A sad, quiet and intense drama about a grandmother raising her grandson. He gets in some trouble and the film slowly follows her as she tries to deal with it. The lead actress gave a very humble performance while dealing with various 'issues' that related to the grandson and her own situation. The film reminded me of the crime drama Mother! also from S.K. a couple of years earlier. That one had a bit more action in it.

A Dog's Journey.

In theatres now.

3.5 of 5 stars. Not for everyone (talking to you, Goregrishers), the story follows a dog's reincarnation over the years as it tries to fulfill its purpose. Kinda slow at first, but if you're a pussy like me, becomes a real tearjerker in the last 30 minutes. Highly recommended for kids and family.

The villainess. 2017. South Korea.
7/10
A John Wick style film, but with a female lead. The difference is this has a plot.
Plenty of action at the start with impressive camera angles and fight scenes. But after a while the 'drama' aspect of things kicks in.
This slows the whole thing to crawl, that coupled with the fact i had to keep adjusting the subtitles made it hard to follow what was happening.
But when the action resumes it was pretty good.

Shin Godzilla. 2016. Japan.
9/10.
A godzilla film from the original studio in Japan.
I'v seen one maybe two of the '70s godzilla films, they were, interesting, the 1998 version was OK, but iv never watched it since.
The latest ones (2014, 2019) don't interest me. This version has the 'low budget' looking Godzilla to a degree but some very impressive destruction. At the heart of the film is how the Japanese government deals with it and the various ministrys and outside countries that help them. It's dialouge heavy after Godzilla turns up and disappears for a while but it's not people with ulterior motives or bullshit like that.
There is a genuine sense of working together. Kinda funny at some points, but enjoyable overall.

Another week, another round of movies in the theatre. First up, Rocketman.

4 of 5 stars

I'm an oldster, so I love Elton John's music. This movie did not disappoint. This is a bio of his career during the early years, showing the easy descent into alcohol, drugs, and madness.
Taron Edgerton, playing 60's and 70's Elton was superb. Great voice, well acted. The actor who played Bernie Taupin, his songwriter for 50+ years was also excellent. Intolerant cunts will have to deal with one moderate gay scene and a few man/man kisses. The music will be worth it.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

4 of 5 stars

I don't understand the critical trashing of this movie. It seems reflexive instead of honest. If you enjoyed any of the X-Men movies before this, you'll like this one too.
This is the second installment following Jean Gray's...uh...maturation?...into the most powerful mutant on the planet. The gang tries to save the space shuttle (1992) from an unknown fire entity in space. Jean gets left behind on the shuttle after the rescue and is attacked by the fire entity. She absorbes it, coming out looking ok. Except her powers are multiplied many times and her emotions begin to take over, and not in a good way.
Special effects are first rate, as usual. Enjoy it in Imax if possible, I totally did.
