In the Canadian education system, they shove this shit down our throat yearly in Social Studies class. They want to make the kids feel guilty for something a religious organization did. It's been 14 years now since the Canadian government paid out reparation money to the indians who claimed to be affected. It absolutely is not only now getting attention.

Just to put some perspective, these are not "mass graves". That implies what went on were executions and the burying of a significant number of corpses in a single location like the genocide in Rwanda. That is not what went on in Canada. These are a collection of unmarked graves that were either never identified with a marker at time of internment or what marker was placed has been lost to the elements, stolen or taken by family members as a keepsake.

Looking at what the Canadian government and various religious orders (not just the Catholics but also the United Church, Anglicans and Presbyterians) did through the lens of modern ideology and norms yes what went on in the residential school system was horrific. However, at the time it was assumed that this was the best way to integrate the "indians" into Canadian culture. No one is denying it was wrong. There have been apologies by all levels of government, all the churches involved and significant financial compensation.

What's going on now is in my opinion nothing more than grandstanding and a money grab.

That you genuinely think a whole people have an average IQ and could function on that end of the spectrum as they had to, does not get you any clout.

Here's a chart from Scientific American explaining what IQ means. Note that the unemployment rate only covers people looking for work. The numbers for "lives in poverty" and "chronic welfare recipients" should better reflect how many sub-75 IQs aren't able to do work. It should just get worse for sub-65 IQs.

IQ is very important because it is the best way we have to explain inequality between ethnic groups. That's why I must mention it.

They had good intentions when they set up these schools, to educate the indian kids to be able to adapt to modern society. Unfortunately though, indians have an average IQ of 78 so even the best of efforts would have failed. Not to mention their hereditary tendency towards alcoholism.

These schools first started in the early 1800s, a time when medicine hadn't progressed very far. It was normal for families of all races to have half their kids die of disease before reaching adulthood. Since indians went to residential schools when they were young, many died at the schools instead of with their original families.

90% of them were closed by the early 70s, so these are half a century old now. No one under the age of 50 was involved in any way. This is old history now.

The remains were confirmed by Chief Rosanna Casimir of the Tk'emlups te Secwépemc First Nation last weekend using ground-penetrating radar. Much of the school grounds have yet to be cleared, and it's likely more remains will be found.

Over 150,000 students were dragged into these schools where the aim was to forcibly assimilate these children. It is said that at least 4,100 students had died as a result of the mistreatment, neglect, diseases, or accidents they experienced while attending these schools. The Truth and Reconciliation report, released in June of 2015, said the policy amounted to "cultural genocide".

The Catholic Church had played a large role, operating approximately two-thirds of the 130 schools. As per the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, one recommendation was to apologize to the survivors and the affected families. The Pope "felt that he could not personally respond" when Justin Trudeau brought it up during a trip to the Vatican in March of 2018.

First post. Ground penetrating radar does not 'prove' anything. To date, only a juveniles rib has and a child's tooth have been found. There is still debate about whether the 215 number is realistic and there still even debating whether to exhume the site to prove. I'm not denying that it is true, I'm only saying it is not a fact.
