Between 1976 and 1986 an assailant known as the Oklahoma City Butcher murdered up to 3 women in the area. His victims were young homeless Native Americans who were believed to be sex workers due to the locations their remains were discovered. All women were mutilated, dismembered, and missing their sexual organs.

Victim #1: Cathy Lynn Shakelford

Cathy Lyn Shakelford ran away from home at the age of 17 and lived homeless in Oklahoma City. Two months prior to her death she was treated at Oklahoma City hospital which would be the last time shes seen alive.

On April 1, 1976 tree oil workers explored an abandoned house and found Cathy's severed head in a popcorn bucket. A smile had been carved into Cathy's face. Police were immediately contacted who later found the rest of Cathy's remains of arms, legs, and torso scattered around the home. Her hands and sexual organs were removed and never found leading investigators to believe they had been taken as trophies. The possibility that Cathy came in contact with a wild animal had been considered but was later ruled out as it became evident that the dismemberment was to precise and could not have been done by an animal but by a person with basic knowledge of human anatomy.

In 1993 a relative of Cathy's, Andrea Medina decided to report her missing. The first attempts to do so in 1976 had been swept under the rug and it was believed that Cathy was alive but cut off all contact with relatives. When Andrea described cathy as young native American women with curly hair to sergeant Norma Adam's, she recalled a 17 year old facial reconstruction of a Jane Doe on file who matched the description. DNA would eventually match the Jane Doe to Cathy Lynn Shakelford.

Victim #2: Arley Bell Killian

On April 19, 1979 during a game of basketball between neighborhood kids, a dog wandered off to return with a questionable object in his mouth. The kids soon realized the object was indeed a human head. It was apparent the murder was very recent due to the condition of the remains. Shortly after, a massive search effort to find clues and suspects was initiated.

Police would discover more remains scattered throughout the neighborhood, some being wrapped in bags and newspaper. The assailant washed the parts before disposing of them causing an odd absence of blood. Her left hand, pelvis, head, shoe, and other parts of flesh had been accumulated. It was apparent the assailant wanted the remains to be discovered as they were disposed of in busy parts of the city. Even more parts would be found within the next two months with some believing the assailant was toying with the police in his own game.

Six days after the initial discovery of the remains the body would be identified by finger prints and dental records as 22 year old Arley Bell Killian. Beaten and raped at 16 by her father who was serving 35 years in prison, Arley Killian became addicted to drugs which ultimately led her down the path of homelessness. She was last seen alive only four hours before her head was discovered in the park.

Victim #3: Tina Marcia Sanders

On March 6, 1986 62 year old Archie Alber discovered a torso, a lower half of a left leg and other small parts in the tall grass that separated his back yard from an alley way, less than a mile from the previous victims discovery. Similar to Arley Killian remains, the parts had been washed and void of blood. Six days later a skull was found by a local digging through some junk a few blocks away. Soon after, the police were able to match the skull to the remains found six days earlier.

On March 22, 1986 police were able to identify the remains as Tina Marcia Sanders. Similar to the previous victims Tina was a homeless Native American women in which police suspected to be involved sex work.

Possible Suspect: Henry Lee Lucas
Henry_Lee_Lucas.jpg

You may or may not know that Henry Lee Lucas was a serial killing drifter who confessed to hundreds on unsolved murders. One of those confessions turned out to be the murder of Arley Bell Killian. However it's unlikely Henry Lee Lucas was the perpetrator as he is known to have falsely confessed to killing hundreds of women.

Conclusion: A few weeks after the discovery of Tina Sanders, police linked her murders to Kathy shakelford and Arley Killian. All three women were killed, dismembered and mutilated in similar manners being beheaded and having their sexul organs removed. All were discovered within one mile of each other. Police are confident that the three women were killed by a single perpetrator.
