Self Harm - have you, do you and what?

Hiya, just popped back to the forum after having a break and thought I'd just let you know I've read your comments. This thread didn't turn out to be as I intended it, I was under the impression some people here would like to talk about the gore they inflict on themselves in the form of self harm. It's a shame it turned into an opportunity to judge and insult me and those others who self harm whether for pleasure or part of their mental illness. I have self harmed for both of these reasons. I do not need attention from you....complete strangers, as I have plenty of loving positive 'attention' from my family. So I do not self harm or talk about my self harm to get attention or judgment, whether it be online or with medical personnel. It's a common misconception that self harmers only do so to get attention, but I think it's terribly arrogant to assume that I or anyone would do such things to their body to get a reaction from someone who means nothing to them, someone they don't even know. I have experienced this ignorant and misguided attitude from medical staff when I have needed hospital treatment for my self inflicted injuries, and I have had to remind them that self harm is about 'self' not others....so just stitch me up and quit judging or try to understand me. I do not smoke, drink heavily, eat unhealthily or partake in any dangerous activities, the only things I have done to harm my body are the things mentioned in my original post. I don't judge those who do those other activities as its their body, their choice. Any nasty comments you have made to me have not upset or affected me, I am a bigger person than that and I see you for the Internet trolls you really are. So this opportunity to discuss our self harm injuries ends here for me, as does my participation in this forum. I wouldn't sit in a room full of people who are negative to me, so I don't intend to join in online with negative people. It was only supposed to be a discussion about our own personal 'gore'. I've learnt this place is not for me. So take care folks, it was nice knowing some of you for a while!

I can understand their "ignorance" and "misguided attitude" that they have to attend to some twat who just sits there and cuts themselves, over someone who is in for a heart attack or appendicitis. It's people like you who annoy me, the kind who don't ever learn basic first aid and go bother the emergency room like you're all entitled. I put you in the same category as drug addicts who take up the time of doctors and nurses when they have better things to do with their time, rather than run around self destructive idiots.

Pro-self-harm areas don't really exist. Everyone either wants you to stop because it's bad, or tells you to keep doing it you; attention whore- and go die. People that enjoy this kind of stuff as a general rule stop calling it self-harm and move onto other more accepted terms for violent sexual and emotional release like those found in the BDSM community. Self-harming will sadly always be seen as something juvenile, even though I've known just as many middle-aged people who self-harm as I have younger people. It's a stereotype. And like all stereotypes it is understandable in some cases, arguable in others, and down right wrong in a few. But it is just the way the world is. Might as well get used to it.

Exactly. I am not friendly to the attention seekers who come in needing to be stitched up or needing to be admitted for IV antibiotics for self-inflicted injuries. What really pisses me off is the ones who deliberately overdose then immediately call someone to take them to the hospital so I have to save their sorry ass. I see the same people over and over again. After getting patched up they get sent across the street to the mental treatment center but most of them don't want help to get better. They enjoy the attention and they enjoy manipulating their family and friends. It is beyond frustrating. I wish I was allowed to punch them in the head.

Eventhough im a self-harmer i agree with you. I dont believe you should go to the hospital for something you have inflicted upon yourself with intent. Its a waste of money and waste of others time. Its a selfish act and i think the self-harmer should take care of himself/herself for his or her choices.

Smoking and drinking have primarily internal effects on the body. Cigarettes can turn your teeth a sickly yellow and booze fucks up your sense of judgement for the night. Hard shit like meth and crack, however, will wreak hell on one's appearance. They are extremely hard for any addict to come off of ; it's not like it's some secret hobby they are able to carry on at their own leisure.

To me, tattoos, piercing, and mods are different from cutting because I believe they have the potential to be beautiful - works of art and brazen statements admired by most. In self-harm I just see... unsightly gashes. Pale lumpy scars. Cries for help and attention. Pathetic and sad beyond help.

You should have more respect for your body, Bling. It's the only one you'll ever have. Not sure why I'm even saying all this, since you're probably not here to read it, but there you go...[/quote
as much as i agree with you i highly doubt there all doing it for attention

:p But at least you agree self-harming is stoopid. Although for continuation of the thread, I think this really is a discussion of two completely separate topics. Self-harm as attention seeking faux suicide-like behavior vs. self-harming as cutting/burning endorphin generating behavior which people engage in to deal with anxiety and depression. They both have different causes and need completely different mental health approaches.

/For the record I don't self-harm.
//My ego is too big.
yep i understand that! im having serious shit in my head and still no cutting or burning or nothing stupid shit! expect hard drug abuse...but that not count...coz its fun and so goood daaamn healthy :D i dont know anyone here who is so fuckin moron that he/she is cutting wrists and shit! my opinion is thats stupid way to get attention...why they not get that fuckin attention like murdering police officer or somekind other fun stuff...common sense is great deal.. :D

Yes I have, and I thought it was time to move on from that but only lasted a month and a bit. I most often do the usual, razor blades, but I've used needles and kitchen knives as well. Also occasional scratching, burning, biting, and using stuff like tape or bands to turn my skin blue.

Crossed my mind before. Didn't go through it. I was in my teens, being stupid about everything. I love myself more than I realize, I guess.
