Self Harm - have you, do you and what?

Yes plz. As long as you do it legit.

You'll get a lot of flak for it, but I don't care. We need a new source of someone's self-mutilation.
Of course I'll be legit, I wouldn't dream of faking you guys out :)

I don't mind getting flak, I'll keep the emotion out and just post the pictures with maybe a brief description saying what I used or how long it bled. I just need to get a new phone, I lost mine. Once that happens, I'll actually have a camera.

I have self harmed before, but found no point in it besides the adrenaline. I do occasionally put cigarettes out on myself, but that is to just feel something aside from being numb and cushy. I have never understood how that helps to relieve anything, I would imagine other was are more productive aswell as better feeling than self harming.

I meant more... legit in your self harm. We've had a few come in here with some pretty pathetic looking shit, like, my cat does worse to me playing. They've all been laughed off the forum or back into lurking. So if you're going to upload stuff like that, I'd rethink it.

Either way, I look forward to your content for whatever joys it may bring.

Ah, I got it. Don't worry, I have surgical blades (albeit small ones meant for animals), so I can get pretty deep.

I hope it brings plenty of joy :) I should be able to start posting the first week of September. I've been trying to stop giving in to urges lately, so this will be a relief

I was a raging bulimic for nearly twenty-five years. My teeth are crap. I have scars around my mouth and knuckles. My digestive system is shot and I have an irregular heartbeat. Don't do this, people. It's not cool. I went into the hospital for the last time in 2010 and was kept there forever. What a rotten experience. But I've been "clean" ever since and have been able to maintain my sanity with counseling.

There was a young girl there who was 19. She was anorexic. I thought she was so young and beautiful and worthwhile and what a waste it was that she was destroying her life this way. That was my turning point. I had wasted a huge chunk of my life on this fricking mess and for what? Did I want my little girl to turn out like me or this young lady? Was this girl going to see how long I survived (I REALLY lucked out!! I should have been dead years ago!!), think that that's the way it is and then die? What kind of example was I setting? It made me think of somebody else for a change. That helped me a lot, ironically.

Still, my little girl hates her thighs so I suppose she's coming along nicely. :gaah:

Hate to think that anyone here who self-harms will be encouraged to do it, due to getting attention for it here, by posting pics.
I have no qualms about the fact that I like to see people slice themselves up. I encourage it, and endorse it. I also support and encourage recovery though. There are different breeds of self-harmers. There are the ones who want to be seen. The ones who just need that little push to be shoved into the limelight. And the ones who will always hide. I like to go after the ones in the second group, because they usually have the best scars, and I respect the privacy of the hiders.

We all joined a gore site. We're all here to see people in pain, or the aftermath. I just like to have a conversation, or participate in some manner with my entertainment and the characters involved therein.

ps: if you live into adulthood, how will you explain the scars to your children/ grandchildren? Emo is so pathetic.

It might be pathetic but you look SUPER cool and hardcore!

I did this shit for years when I was younger. I hid it because I didn't need the fucking attention, I was just real fucked up for a while. The scars don't go away, they really don't. I've got one on my thigh that's a good 8-10 inches long and was super deep when I did it. I can't wear short shorts even if I want to and God forbid if I ever start dating again I'll have to explain this bullshit. I feel like an idiot for doing dumbass stuff when I was a stupid kid.

It isn't fucking cool, stop being an attention seeking twat and go sit in the corner.

I hope that's not aimed at anyone in particular... flaming is a no-no up here.

Also, since you claim to be a former self-harmer, do you really think that kind of nonsense is going to help/stop anyone who is still actively self-harming? How would you have reacted if someone had said that to you when you were hurting?

Yeah, been here a while, I'm aware of no flaming out of FLH. It's a general statement to anyone fitting the bill.

Absolutely not. There is no stopping anyone who is doing anything like that. It's just like people who are drug addicts or alcoholics, say whatever you want, send them to rehab, put them in jail, whatever, nothing can help them if they don't want to help themselves. If someone is actually hurting or has some really bad shit going on and that's why they're doing what they're doing, ok. They need help and love and someone to listen. The problem I find is that SO goddamn many of these people aren't that way, they're just desperate attention seekers who make people who do it for real reasons look even worse.

Not here to argue or start shit or make anybody feel bad, this is just something I have strong feelings about. I hate to see people in a bad place, I hate to see people pretending to be in a bad place even more.

I'm with you on that at least.

I do however think there is a difference in some cases between the cliche attention seekers and people who genuinely just want to share their experiences with curious people. The line is very thin though. And very easy to cross.

What's sad is "seeking attention" is exactly how I got started. Eating disorders were all the rage in the mid eighties and were featured on every "Afterschool Special" and "Movie of the Week". I hated my family, I hated my life, I hated my self and figured a good "disease of the week" would make me somehow special. I even relished the idea of getting sent to the hospital because it's what models and ballerinas did. Then I got caught up in it somehow and it spiraled out of control...and being hospitalized wasn't fun or glamorous. I wish people who do stupid things for attention would realize that it can very soon become real...and impossible to stop without professional help. YEARS of professional help.

I hate to say this, but my dad has confiscated my blades >_>

I plan on stealing more soon, though, so pics will be here eventually ;) they're surgical blades, so it'll be legit.

After reading through this thread, I realized that not one member who replied has stated that they have actually worked in a clinical setting with people who display Self Abusive Behaviour/Self Injurious Behaviour (SIB's), aside from perhaps stitching them up and then having not an ounce of empathy.

Cutting is a known addiction. It has nothing to do with the person being Borderline Personality (that's a disorder all on it's own and cutting is not a characteristic trait of the disorder). I worked in Social Services for almost 25 years and I've dealt with shit that people haven't even heard of, let along even understand. During my years working with adolescents and young adults who were cutters but who also fit the bill of Clinical Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Suicidal tendencies, etc. I was able to see this affliction first hand.

My years working in clinical settings with mild to severely autistic individuals also showed a similar pattern of SIB: although often more severe.

Persons who cut aren't necessarily out to get your sympathy and attention. Actually, it's usually quite the opposite - although some will engage in the behaviour for the kicks or for attention. If they walk around displaying their craftwork for all to see then they don't typically fit the bill of a cutter: these ones are looking for attention which to them is often positive in nature. The old, "Look at what I did...almost cut that vein right in half...I'm a bad ass."

True cutters will not dance around showing off their cuts and scars. They are often embarrassed about them, go to great lengths to conceal them and rarely talk to others about them. It's not something most of them are proud of.

As an addiction, cutting usually starts off at a young age (early teens). Often it ends there. But if the person goes on to develop Major Depression and/or Anxiety Disorder (in it's many forms) then it becomes something that the person will continue to perform in order to feel in charge of their lives and bodies - and this can continue into adult life. Most often it's a major release of Anxiety for the afflicted: but it only lasts so long - just like a drug. Then they need to do it again.

These ones don't want your sympathy - they hide what they've done and tend to cut in areas of their body that they can easily cover over. There's not much attention seeking in that. It's also not necessarily a sign of suicide, although many cases of extensive SIB can lead to death. Empathy before sympathy, unless you have been trained to deal with this behaviour. Afterall, someone in your own family could develop this and folks would change their "it's all for attention" attitude real quick.

If you're not an alcoholic, or a druggie, or a gambler or a cutter and your knowledge about such things is limited - then your opinion/s on the matter means shit and you're in no position to even discuss it.

For those that don't agree with me, then let us know your professional/clinical experience and knowledge about the subject that allows you to speak so negatively of people who cut. Have you worked with teens/adults in a clinical setting who suffer from this disorder? Have you been professionally trained to deal with such people?

There are many effective treatment modalities to help treat cutters and help them to stop. I like knowing that I don't just judge people by some behaviour that I don't understand or dislike. It's something that anyone can do.

And that's my $3.68 worth :)
