Juan “La Mataviejitas” Barraza
mataviejitastvanotaok.JPG

Juana Barraza Samperio is unique in the annals of crime. Serial killers are very rare in Latin America generally; female serial killers almost unheard of; and serial killers’ female victims are usually from the lower class.

Juana, the “little old lady killer” (La Mataviejitas) killed at least 29 elderly middle-class and upper middle-class women in Mexico City in 2005-2006. What made the case more interesting was what it revealed about changing Mexican culture. It used to be that people lived in multi-generational households, and it would be rare for elderly women to be living alone — few had the luxury, and those that did generally lived with a companion, or at least a maid.

I lived a few doors down from a Mercado with apartments on the top floors (and wanted to rent there myself, but nothing ever came open). The place was almost an informal teachers’ retirement home — there was a gang of retired schoolma’arms living there who always had their dinner at the same Comida Economica I favored (and once, having made the error of sitting at THEIR table — I forgot it was time for them to show up — the one with Alzheimers simply sat down, rambled on and ate her dinner with me… probably having the same converstion — and dinner — she always did). The point is that little old ladies — even maiden lady schoolma’arms usually weren’t completely on their own.

It was kind of a shock to the sociologists and talking heads to discover that times were changing. The best anyone could do was advise this until then unknown social group to stick together (solidarity isn’t just a political phrase in Mexico), and hang out in the parks or other public places. Being anti-clerical Mexico, of course the official worriers never suggested they all go to church.

Juana Barraza was operating in a changing social climate. The Federal District had just introduced a 600 peso credit for the elderly. That wasn’t a lot of money, but it was enough in many cases to stretch the family budget to a point where grandma wasn’t having to go out selling candy on the Metro. And, given the economic uncertainty in Mexico (and the worries of elderly middle-class ladies trying to maintain their standard of living), it was popular with most people. But, was the killer finding people through the pension records?

Given that Mexican politics is a rough sport, it was only to be expected that some in the media would blame the leftist district government (specifically AMLO) for somehow unleasing the killer. Then again, anything that went wrong in Mexico City was blamed on AMLO by the same people.

As it turned out, Barraza was — in a roundabout way — taking advantage of the social services system. The victims were mostly middle-class, or upper middle-class women. Usually they did have a maid, but very few people have live-ins any more. Barraza, again unusual for a serial killer, didn’t have some particuarly twisted psychotic reason for killing… it was simple greed. She’d killed the old ladies to cover up robberies.

She’d show up, claiming to be from the District health department (public health workers, social services providers — and even the animal control folks — who innoculated my dogs for free) do show up at your door from time to time in DF). If no one was home, she just broke in and robbed the joint. And, if she wasn’t caught in the robbery, the little old lady lived to tell the tale. Which several did. And led to Barraza’s capture in June 2006.

Barraza was sentenced to 900 years in the slammer yesterday. That in itself is noteworthy. Mexico has no death penalty (it is a civilized country, after all) and no such thing as a “life sentence”. The maximum sentence for any crime is 50 years. However, with 17 murder convictions, and 12 for robbery, even with time off for good behavior, she’s unlikely to leave prison alive. If she does, she’ll be a very old lady by then — and hopefully living alone.

The champion serial killers of all times in Mexico were also women with an odd business ethic. Las Poquianchis, Delfina and María de Jesús Gonzáles buried at least eighty women and ten men in their back yard.

The sisters were too cheap to pay pensions to aging hookers, and a shallow grave in the back yard was the retirement plan at Guanajuanto’s Whorehouse from Hell. Other victims were unfortunate job seekers. Everyone knew there was something shady about the Gonzáles sisters’ establishment, and the job seekers who answered their want ads weren’t always suitable for the world’s oldest profession. Some of those ending up in the back yard were the ultimate in rejected job applicants. The men were apparently out-of-town customers who’d showed up with cash in their pockets. The pair was convicted in 1964 and each received a measly 40 year sentence.

Las Poquianchis were immortalized in Jorge Ibargüengoitia’s satirical 1977 novel, Los Muertas (available in English as “Dead Girls“). And, you’ll still find Mexicans who grew up in the 60s and 70s who call slutty girls “Las Poquianchis” — for the killers or the victims, I can’t say.

Hélène Jégado (1803-1852) was a French domestic servant and serial killer. She is believed to have murdered as many as 36 people with arsenic over a period of 18 years. After an initial period of activity, between 1833 and 1841, she seems to have stopped for nearly ten years before a final spree in 1851.

The Angel Makers of Nagyrév
angelmakers.jpg

Las+Fabricantes+de+%C3%81ngeles+%28006%29.jpg

"The Angel Makers of Nagyrév" were a group of women living in the village of Nagyrév, Hungary who between 1914 and 1929 poisoned to death an estimated 300 people (however, Béla Bodó puts the number of victims at 45-50). They were supplied arsenic and encouraged to use it for the purpose by a midwife or "wise woman" named Júlia Fazekas and her accomplice Susi Oláh (Zsuzsanna Oláh). Their story is the subject of the documentary film The Angelmakers.

Crimes

Fazekas was a middle-aged midwife who arrived in Nagyrév in 1911, with her husband already inexplicably missing. Between 1911 and 1921 she was imprisoned 10 times for performing illegal abortions, but was consistently acquitted by judges supporting abortion.

In Hungarian society at that time, the future husband of a teenage bride was selected by her family and she was forced to accept her parents' choice. Divorce was not allowed socially, even if the husband was an alcoholic or abusive. During World War I, when able-bodied men were sent to fight for the Austro-Hungarian empire, rural Nagyrév was an ideal location for holding Allied prisoners of war. With the limited freedom of POWs about the village, the women living there often had one or more foreign lovers while their husbands were away. When the men returned, many of them rejected their wives' affairs and wished to return to their previous way of life, creating a volatile situation. At this time Fazekas began secretly persuading women who wished to escape this situation to poison their husbands using arsenic made by boiling flypaper and skimming off the lethal residue.

The first poisoning in Nagyrév took place in 1911; it was not the work of Fazekas. The deaths of other husbands, children, and family members soon followed. The poisoning became a fad, and by the mid 1920's, Nagyrév earned the nickname "the murder district." There were an estimated 45-50 murders over the 18 years that Fazekas lived in the district. She was the closest thing to a doctor the village had and her cousin was the clerk who filed all the death certificates, allowing the murders to go undetected.

Janie Lou Gibbs
AG_26_Gibbs.jpg

Janie Lou Gibbs (born 1933) was a serial killer from Cordele, Georgia, who killed her three sons, a grandson, and her husband, by poisoning them with rat poison in 1966 and 1967.

Murders

Mrs. Gibbs' husband of 18 years, Charles Clayton Gibbs, 39, died January 21, 1966. Her youngest son, Marvin Ronald Gibbs, 13, died August 29,1966 , followed by her middle son, Melvin Watess Gibbs, 16, on January 23,1967. She inherited $31,000 from their deaths and tithed 10 percent to her church.

The deaths had previously been attributed to liver disease, but she was eventually arrested Christmas Eve 1967 after her oldest son, Roger Ludean Gibbs, 19, died in the same fashion as his father and brothers. On October 28, 1967, Roger's month-old son Ronnie Edward Gibbs also died under suspicious circumstances.

Patricia Allanson
patricia-allanson-70.gif

Always thought of herself as special. Her parents took any responsibility away from her and thus Patricia was convinced that a husband had to give her anything she ever dreamed of.
Patricia found this with her first husband, an army seargeant and had three children with him. Obviously he was not giving enough so she headed for six year younger Tom ALLANSON, who seemed able to offer her what she meant to deserve.
They started their honeymoon dressed like Scarlett and Rhett Butler on their heavily mortgaged 52-acre home “Tara” in Zebulon (GA). They raised Morgan horses and Patricia´s “Scarlett dreams” seemed to come true.
It was only two months after their marriage that Patricia talked her husband into a paranoia that his father, Walter ALLANSON, wanted to kill him. Walter ALLANSON made no secret about being against his daughter-in-law.
When a pistol and a rifle were stolen from Walter ALLANSON´s home, his father on the other hand believed that his son planned to kill him.
Police searched Tom´s home - without result.
On June 29, 1974 Walter and his wife Carolyn took a ride with their car, when someone shot at them. Despite Tom was far away, they were convinced that her son had organized the attack.
When Tom wanted to discuss the escalating situation on July 3, he went to his parents home and found nobody at home. He went to the basement to wait for his mother´s return. To his surprise his father came home, who had received an anonymous call by a woman, that Tom would be in the house. After some struggle Walter called the police but sent them away when they arrived. When his wife Carolyn came home, Walter demanded her to bring him the gun, he recently bought.
When police officers arrived once again after another emergency call, they found Carolyn and Walter shot numerous times.
Tom was soon arrested as prime suspect and Patricia tried to get him out by telling lies. Also Tom told lies and so he was convicted and sentenced to life.
Soon after Patricia tried to convince Tom into a suicide pact, he later thought, this was her attempt to get rid of him and inherit everything.
Patricia now had the farm for herself, two months after their marriage only. When the farm and barns burned down, Patricia forged Tom´s signature to get the insurance payments.
She then worked on Tom´s wealthy grandparents, who made her primary beneficiary in their will. Patricia fed them arsenic with their meals and when they grew ill, she was arrested and convicted to eight years in prison.
After her release she did not hesitate to persuade a wealthy couple from Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. CHRIST, to hire her as nurse. Mr. CHRIST survived only a short period.
Meantime police had quested Tom again, who was free on parole after serving 15 years in prison. They found Patricia ALLANSON to be a manipulative liar who obviously choreographed Tom´s parents homicide.
In a controversial plea bargain Patricia ALLANSON agreed to seven charges, including theft, attempted murder and posing as registered nurse for not being charged with the murder of Mr. CHRIST or the murders of Tom´s parents.
Patricia ALLANSON went to prison for another eight years and allegedly lives with her stepfather and his new wife since her release 1999.

Lyda Catherine Ambrose

A typical "Black Widow," Lyda Catherine AMBROSE left a trail of five dead husbands and lovers in her quest for insurance policy payoffs. Born in 1891, nothing is known about her early life until 1917 when she killed her first fiancee in Keytesville, Missouri. The unfortunate man died of stomach pains after taking out a life insurance policy worth $2,500 in the name of his future bride. Not one for grieving, Lyda turned her charms on her fiancee's brother and married him a few days after his brother's death. Within three months he too died fo "stomach trouble" after taking out a $2,500 life insurance policy.
Next stop Lyda moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where she married the owner of a restaurant where she worked as a waitress. Soon after their June 10, 1918 wedding, the hapless man dropped dead dead from "stomach ulcers." Unfortunately for his wife he had forgotten to sign his life insurance documents and was unable to collect.
Soon she was onto victim number four whom she killed three months after they exchanged wedding bows. This time though his insurance policy was signed and she collected $10,000 dollars for her husband's untimely death. Not one to sit around twiddling her thumbs, she married husband number four (victim number five) on October 1920.On November 20 the man died and she collected a $12,000 insurance payment that had been purchased on october 6.
Until then police were unaware of Lyda's bad luck with her husbands. Once her cottage was searched authorities found a large amount of old-fashioned arsenic-laced flypaper. Toxicology test on her late husbands revealed heavy doses of the poison in their remains. Police arrested her in Oakland, California and returned to Idaho where she had killed her most recent victim.
Convicted of first degree murder she was given life. Always the planner, she escaped from the Idaho state prison on May 4, 1931. By 1932 she was recaptured in Kansas City in 1932 as she searched for a new husband. Nothing more is know about her asfter except that she died in jail of old age.

Marie Alexandrine Becker
mariebecker.jpg

Born in 1877, Marie Alexandrine had always been a beautiful woman; she never had any trouble attracting the men in her hometown of Liege, Belgium. When 33 years old, she wed Charles Becker, who considered himself fortunate to have won such a lovely woman. And for twenty years she was indeed a faithful wife. But, after twenty years Marie had grown so bored with living with an unromantic laborer that she could scream.

At 53 years old, she knew that the world offered much, much more. Her time, she determined, had come. So she laced Becker's tea with arsenic. In no time flat, she found herself what she thought was romance on two feet and married it in a fling. However, the new husband, Lambert Bayer, proved to be another dud. She poisoned him, too, after a month's span. Wedded bliss now a myth, Marie decided to spend the remainder of her life flinging and sinning and chasing heartthrobs, wherever they could be found. One problem remained. To move in the glamorous world she yearned, to meet the type of man she yearned, would require that she keep in step with the upper social class of Liege. As a widow of two middle-class bureaucrats, she had not inherited the kind of francs required to finance her dreams. The money she had received provided a practical toehold in a practical world, it even allowed her to open a small dress shop in a fashionable town square, but it fell short of fantasy. Marie contrived a solution. Through her store, which offered couture and formal women's wear, she had become acquainted with a number of society's grand dames.

Immersing herself in their space, she soon developed a friendship with many of them, often being invited to soirees and teas laid out in palatial courtyards. She convinced quite a few of these women of class to set her up as their sole dressmaker. That was step one. Step two brought in the real money. The method, simple. Once invited over for a private fashion-session, during which tea and pastries would be served, Marie found an opportunity when the other wasn't looking to mix the elder's refreshments with a lethal dose of digitalis. (She carried a small vial of the liquid in her purse wherever she went.) As her host grabbed her banging chest, gasped for air, turned red and died, Marie helped herself to jewelry, cash and anything expensive she could stuff in her pockets.

For more than a year from March, 1935 to September, 1936 she killed ten women, among them models of the Liege aristocracy. Marie had one big fault, that is, another big fault apart from the obvious. She talked incessantly and talked and talked. One thoughtless evening in late 1936 she admitted the source of her income to a friend she thought could be considered a confrere. Marie erred. The next morning, the gendarmes came knocking at her door. She accused her acquaintance of spreading lies and almost managed to get away with it, until the police searched her rooms and found more bejeweled trinkets and knick-knacks stuffed in drawers and in trunks than were on display at the Louvre. It was only due to the fact that Belgium rarely executed women that Marie Alexandrina Becker was saved from the gallows. She died serving a life sentence in prison.

Gertraud Arzberger

NEWS :

Austrian Who Killed Four Infants Gets Life

A woman who stuffed two of her infants into a freezer and entombed two more in concrete-filled buckets was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison Friday, closing out a macabre case that stunned this usually tranquil alpine nation.
A court in the southern city of Graz, where the four tiny bodies were discovered in rapid succession last summer, convicted Gertraud Arzberger, 33, of three counts of murder. Her long-term partner was sentenced to 15 years as an accessory.

Arzberger had been tried on five counts but had pleaded guilty to killing only four of her babies, and experts said they could not rule out that one might have been stillborn.

"I'm sorry. I can't make everything all right again," Arzberger said before the verdicts were read out.

Her live-in companion, Johannes Genser, 39, had proclaimed his innocence and insisted he never noticed Arzberger was pregnant. Neighbors, however, had testified that her swollen belly was obvious, and prosecutors said it was implausible to believe he did not know she was carrying the children.

The two were charged in June after police found the bodies of two newborns in a basement freezer shared by residents of an apartment complex in Graz, about 120 miles south of Vienna, and the remains of two more entombed in paint buckets filled with concrete.

Autopsies indicated the two infants found in the freezer were still alive when put inside, wrapped in plastic bags. Tests could not be performed on the two newborns whose remains were sealed in concrete because they had deteriorated too much.

Prosecutors had charged the woman with killing five infants, based on testimony from neighbors who said they saw five pregnancies. But a fifth body was never found, and Arzberger denied ever having a fifth child.

Before the jury returned the verdicts, state attorney Johannes Winklhofer urged the court to deliver a stiff sentence.

"She is a murderer. She killed four babies in a brutal and gruesome fashion," Winklhofer said.

Her partner, he said, "knew everything ... she could not hide her condition from the neighbors, and certainly not from her friend."

Austria has no death penalty, and the minimum sentence for homicide is 10 years.

Multiple homicides are rare in Austria, where the case held many spellbound for months.
The story broke when a neighbor living in the apartment block went down to the basement to get some ice cream for his children and found two of the tiny bodies beneath frozen meat and vegetables while he was rummaging through the freezer.

Police sniffer dogs found the others in the concrete-filled pails, which were hidden beneath debris piled up inside a garden shed on the property.

Neighbors had described Arzberger, a bookkeeper, as a hard worker who kept a tidy house and a beautiful yard in front of her apartment.

Prosecutors said Arzberger told investigators she killed the infants out of despair over her inability to pay the bills, and out of fear that having children might drive away Genser, a carpenter and her partner of eight years.

Genser's lawyer, Kurt Klein, insisted in closing arguments Friday that the charges were "pure fiction." Prosecutors said DNA tests showed that Genser had fathered at least three of the four infants.

Did she kill more than 4 babies?

A shocking case of infinticide was discovered recently in Graz, a regional capital of Austria. When a neighbor of 32 year old Gertraud A. searched for some ice in a freezer in the basement of a two-family home in Graz, he found the frozen corpse of a new-born. When police sent the freezer for further examination to the Graz pathology institute, a second baby was found under the frozen food-stuff. What at first glance appeared as a routine case of a desperate mother, turned out to be one of the most shocking cases of infanticide ever reported. When examining the house and surrounding, police found baby #3 and 4, one stuffed in a bucket filled with concrement, the other hidden behind a pile of rubbish in a dump near the house.Neighbors describe the 32-year old bookkeeper als "always friendly and helpful", nobody can imagine this grisly tragedy.Gertraud A. and her partner Hannes G. are being questionned since being arrested last Thursday. She immediately admitted to having given birth to the babies, but denies any intention to kill them. She asserts, she never noticed to be pregnant and was surprised finding a "bloody lump" in her bathing tube, when she took a bath. She was so shocked, that she panicked and does not remember anything until she got rid of the "thing". Her partner pretends, that he didn´t know about any pregnancy of Gertraud. The carpenter is married to another woman, fathering three children and lives with Gertraud since eight years.A special task-force is researching now for the former homes of the couple for more possible dead babies. The two live in the "horror-house" since three years only, having moved several times before.

Marie Besnard (1896–1980), also known as 'The Good Lady of Loudun', was an accused serial poisoner in the mid 20th century.

Besnard was first charged with multiple murder on July 21, 1949, under her given name, Marie Joséphine Philippine Davaillaud. After three trials lasting over 10 years (the first held in Poitiers), Besnard was finally freed in 1954, then acquitted on December 12, 1961. The case attracted widespread attention throughout the country and remains one of the most enigmatic in modern French legal history.

Cecile Bombeek aka Sister Godfrida

Early in 1977, nurses employed at the public hospital in picturesque Wetteren, Belgium, began comparing notes on curious events in the 38-bed geriatric ward. For openers, the death rate had increased dramatically in recent months, with twenty-one patients lost in the span of a year. Other cases revealed signs of sadistic mistreatment, including catheters ripped from the bladders of elderly patients by "persons unknown." In time, suspicion focused on 44-year-old Sister Godfrida, a Josephite nun assigned to the geriatric ward.

Born Cecile Bombeek , the product of a staunchly Catholic home, Sister Godfrida adopted her religious name after joining the Apostolic Order of St. Joseph. Her behavior appears to have been exemplary before 1976, when the aftermath of brain surgery left her addicted to morphine. Narcotics are available in Wetteren, despite stiff criminal penalties, but they are not inexpensive. Neither were Sister Godfrida's bisexual love affairs with a retired missionary and a local teacher; her lovers enjoyed expensive food, vintage wine, and Cecile was anxious to oblige.

In time, police contended, she began to loot the savings and personal property of her aged patients, embezzling more than $30,000 in a year's time. On the side, she began to display sadistic tendencies, abusing her charges, killing at least three with insulin overdoses when they became "too difficult at night." In retrospect, it was impossible to estimate the lethal sister's body-count. Dr. Jean-Paul De Corte, spokesman for the hospital's governing board, declared, "It could just as well be thirty people as three."

In custody, Cecile's confession to three homicides was sufficient to bring an indictment. In March 1978, she was committed for psychiatric observation, to determine her fitness for trial.

Mary Ann Britland

Mary Ann Britland (1847-1886) of Ashton-under-Lyne was the first woman to be executed by hanging at Strangeways Prison, Manchester, England by James Berry on the 9 August 1886.

Criminal career

In February 1886, she is said to have had some mice infest her home; to eliminate these, she went to the nearby chemist's and bought some packets of "Harrison's Vermin Killer". As this contained both strychnine and arsenic, she was required to sign the poison register.

Britland's first victim was her eldest daughter, 19-year-old Elizabeth Hannah, in March 1886. Elizabeth's death was attributed to natural causes by the doctor who was called to attend the teenager. Mary Ann Britland then claimed £10 on Elizabeth's life insurance policy. Her next victim was her husband, Thomas, aged 44. His death on May 3 was diagnosed as epilepsy, and once again Mary Ann claimed on the insurance. She had been having an affair with her neighbour, Thomas Dixon, and after her own husband's death, was invited to stay at the Dixon's house just across the street at number 128 by Thomas' 29-year-old wife, Mary. On May 14 Mary Dixon was to become Britland's third and final victim.

Dubbed "The Black Widow" for preying on her family and leaving a dead husband, boyfriend and son in her trail, Judy Buenoano was executed on Florida's temperamental Old Sparky on March 30, 1998.
Asked if she had a final statement, she answered weakly, "No, sir," squeezing her eyes shut and keeping them shut, not looking at the witnesses on the other side of the glass. In her final days Judy said she wanted to be remembered as a good mother. "Seeing the face of Jesus, that's what I think about," she recently told a TV station. "I'm ready to go home."

Enriqueta Martí i Ripollés (Sant Feliu de Llobregat 1868 – Barcelona 12th of May 1913) was a Catalan child murderer, kidnapper and procuress of children. She was a self-styled serial killer who made her living through the sale of charms and potions made with human remains, and prostituting little children. Enriqueta was arrested by police in Barcelona the 27th of February of 1912 on charges of abducting several local children. Enriqueta Martí was imprisoned in the penitentiary for women "Reina Amalia" (establishment closed and demolished in 1936). Her last victims, two young girls named Angelita and Teresita Guitart Congost, were rescued alive from the killer's flat, horrifying police with a tale of murder. Angelita was witness to how Enriqueta killed a kidnapped five-year-old boy called "Pepito" on the kitchen table of the flat. Her flat was in the 29, 1st floor of Ponent street (today Joaquim Costa street). But she had more flats in Barcelona, about three where she hid the remains of her victims or she stored them alive to be later used in her potions. In a Ponent street flat the police found several human remains, jars with greasy and coagulated blood, bones, an ancient book of potions, and a notebook written by Enriqueta in Catalan with recipes and potions. In the other flats skulls, and many types of bones were found, legs, hands, hair, ribs...

Christine Falling
news...christine-falling.jpg

Christine Falling was considered "dull-witted" while growing up, and in need of regular medication to control her epileptic seizures. During her youth she would drop cats from lethal heights to "test their nine lives." She would also strangle them as a way of showing them her "love."

In 1982, thirty-nine-year-old Falling admitted to having killed three babies by "smotheration" (sic). She is actually suspected of killing as many as 5 babies, including her own niece, as well as an elderly man to whom she was a caregiver. Falling was fond of saying "I loved them to death."

Debbie Gedzius Fornuto
FORNUTO_debbie.jpg

Debbie Gedzius Fornuto's six children all died before they reached toddler age. At first, their deaths were thought to be from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Then some, including her brother-in-law and the Cook County medical examiner's office, called it murder.

Now, with Fornuto dead after a car crash this week in Las Vegas, the truth may never be known.

"There is no closure now," said the brother-in-law, Harry Gedzius, who spent more than 20 years trying to convince authorities that Fornuto killed her six children, including three of his nephews, one by one, between 1972 and 1987.

Gedzius also claims that she killed his brother. The murder has gone unsolved …

Catherine Flanagan

Margaret Higgins

In 1884 two sisters, Catherine Flanagan and Margaret Higgins, were hanged for the murder of Margaret’s husband Thomas. Angela Brabin (formerly a Merseyside-based solicitor) decided to study the events leading up their trial and execution as the subject of her dissertation for the final section of her MA in Women’s History. She intended to concentrate on the image of the murderess, but soon became diverted by the realisation that there had been far more murders than anyone had previously realised.

It became clear that Flanagan and Higgins were but two of several women, who for a number of years had been insuring relatives, friends and lodgers and then poisoning them with arsenic to claim an early return on their insurance investments. Here was the dark side to the community operating in the slums of Liverpool. Far from helping their neighbours in times of need, they were coldly killing them. The evidence documented in the court papers and the Home Office file is incontrovertible. Although it relates in this instance specifically to Liverpool, the concern of Government ministers of the day and the comments of the respectable press and learned journals such as The Lancet made it clear that the practice was widespread and had been a problem in poor areas of the country for a great many years.

When Thomas died, in the Autumn of 1883, his brother was suspicious and the coroner was alerted. A post-mortem examination of his body revealed traces of arsenic and then other deaths in the sisters’ household were recalled. Three more bodies were exhumed, each found to contain arsenic and all three, like Thomas, had been heavily insured shortly before their death. On her arrest, Catherine Flanagan made a statement to her solicitor blaming her sister Margaret and two other women of poisoning six more victims.

Diana Lumbrera

The case of Diana Lumbrera, the mother who killed ALL six of her children plus a relative’s six-week-old baby, is very similar.

Lumbrera has a baby. Anywhere between 2 months and 5 years, the child allegedly stops breathing. Lumbrera rushes to the nearest emergency room with said child. Said child dies. Only thing observed is a small amount of blood dispensing from the child’s nose. Cause of death undetermined; generally given a “wastebasket” label such as SIDS or septicemia.

Repeat six more times.

LYLES Anjette Donovan

Anjette Lyles' restaurant on Mulberry Street in downtown Macon, Georgia was a favorite lunch spot for the town's lawyers, judges and businesspeople in the 1950s. The food was okay, but what attracted the menfolk was the restaurant's owner, Anjette Lyles. What puzzled Anjette's patrons was how she could remain so cheerful and outgoing with all the tragedy going on around her life.

Her husband, Ben Lyles the original owner of the restaurant, had died unexpectedly in June of 1952. In 1955 her second husband, Joe Neal developed a "weeping rash" and died in agony in December. Two years later, Mrs. Julia Lyles, Anjette's mother-in-law, died after a mysterious illness. Then on top of all the past Anjette's nine-year-old daughter, Marcia suddenly became very sick and died April 5, 1958. Only one person seems to have suspected foul play in this incredible string of deaths.

About three weeks before the death of Marcia, Carrie Jackson, a cook in Anjette's Restaurant, wrote an unsigned note to Mrs. Julia Lyles' sister in Cochran, Georgia. The note warned that Marcia was in danger. The cook was concerned because she felt Anjette was feeding her child poisoned lemonade and other drinks in the hospital. The sister,Mrs. W.K. Bagley, went to Macon, Georgia to see authorities immediately. Nothing was done then and Marcia died. However, Mrs. Bagley's visit had raised suspicions of Bibb County coroner, Lester Chapman, and others. Chapman ask the medical examiner, Dr. Leonard Campbell, to do an autopsy on Marcia, Campbell sent samples of Marcia's organs to the State Crime Lab in Atlanta.

The lab reported that Marcia died of multiple doses of arsenic, most likely from Terro ant poison, a common insecticide. Anjette maintained her innocence throughout the trial, but the jury had heard enough. In mid-October, the jury returned a verdict of guilty and sentenced Anjette to the electric chair. A series of appeals and sanity hearings followed and they eventually declared Anjette insane. On December 4, 1977, Anjette Lyles died of natural causes at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville.

Maria Velten

A classic "black widow," Maria Velten spent twenty years killing her loved ones, around Kempten, West Germany, before she was Snally arrested at age 67. Her father was the first to die, in 1963, followed by an elderly aunt in 1970. Under questioning, Velten would describe the early poisonings as murders of convenience, with her victims being ill and she unable to provide the necessary care. From that point on, a profit motive would prevail, with Velten killing off two husbands -- in 1976 and '78 -- along with a well-to-do boyfriend in 1980. Arrested during August 1983, she was convicted on the basis of her own confessions and was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment.
