Thoughts on selective empathy?

But being serious, answering your question...I reckon some people are born with a chemical imbalance and are psycho from birth...Most people know someone that had all the love and affection and surroundings to thrive, but ended up some dead shit criminal...
On the other hand, Your surroundings and life experiences and upbringing can shape your application of empathy towards other humans....Like my ol' man used to say, you wanna survive in a violent world, you have to be violent yourself...
Look at media and music...Most thoughts we have, are actually not our own original thoughts and have been molded by music, media and the education system...
Here is a Plato quote...
Music directly imitates the passions or states of the soul... when one listens to music that imitates a certain passion, he becomes imbued withthe same passion; and if over a long time he habitually listens to music that rouses ignoble passions, his whole character will be shaped to an ignoble form
That's a very good point. The way people's upbringing effects their future is fascinating to me.

I don't know much on "selective empathy" but from how you describe it, I think don't think it's far-fetched though it definitely doesn't apply to everyone on this site. There are some sick fucks on here but that's kinda expected due the fact that there is a stereotype that anyone that visits these kind of sites are sick in the head.

You said it yourself, there are kind and empathetic people on this site, but those qualities only go so far on a individual basis when we view the shit we do on GG. I myself at one point couldn't view child and animal abuse vids but after a while of viewing GG, I became desensitized to it. It's not that I don't sympathize with those situations, but rather I've come to realize that's the reality we live in whether we think it's fucked up or not. As for being a psychopath, I have idea what exact qualities makes one.

I myself find it easier to empathize with some more than others I guess. Kids, dads, moms, people who work for a living.
I have a hard time empathizing with people I just generally see as bums.
I feel the same way I suppose. I feel like it doesn't phase me much even if I'm close with the person, unless I'm REALLY close to them, which doesn't happen alot.

I don't really understand why people get so angry/triggered/emotional when it comes to kids and animal videos.
Maybe it's the human response to want to protect them, but when you think about, kids/animals won't go through as much distress as say a 30 year old. Their brain isn't as advanced or developed, so they're less aware of their own mortality.
Imagine getting cut in half by a train, an adult will be more distressed because they're very aware of how final death is.
A dog might be in pain but it has no sense of self, I'd rather be the dog than the adult if it was me sliced in half. People are imagining they know what a dog is going through, but it's impossible.
My 2 cents.
That's very true. I don't know why it bothers me so much to see. It probably is just something in my life that's made me more sensitive to seeing animals/children. Probably like you said, the need to protect. I feel like they're more helpless, even if they're not.

Me too, that's why this subject confuses me so much. I'm a very helpful and caring person in general, it's almost like I feel the need to help someone get better but as soon they show me that they don't care, then I really can't get myself to care either.
Diddo! I'm in alignment with that as well!
