FYI Eat your Spermidine- to live longer and healthier lives.

Not that it counts for much but I can assure you that Flatus is 100% a Doctor, as in real doctor, not a google doctor.

While there's plenty of snake oil being peddled in the name of longevity, there's also some solid science happening, particularly in areas like the microbiome. Sure, some studies might seem like they're just playing with mice and spinning theories, but dismissing everything as bunk is shortsighted. Gut bacteria does impact how we age and certain ailments.

I have a lot of respect for Flatus. He's gone above and beyond, taking the time to share his huge expertise with me privately and guiding me in choosing certain products. Thanks to his advice, I've seen significant improvements in various aspects, including my health. Even minor issues like small patches of eczema have cleared up totally since I started following his recommendations, particularly incorporating more gut-friendly foods into my diet. It's been a couple of years now, and my skin is lovely. And yes, while I've always maintained a healthy lifestyle by eating well, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking and drugs, and consuming alcohol in moderation, Flatus's has absolutely elevated my overall health even further.

I am not a mouse either
I am also not sponsored by Dr Flatus miracle spermidine powder™
Then that is great. And a true miracle, that he can figure out what is wrong without doing any test's. As a doctor, I am not allowed to give any medical advise/consultations by law outside the hospital. I can't/won't say too much info on my background, without revealing true identity. So I wont. I am also not looking to start an argument over small disagreements. But for those who is not in medical science, I just wanted to point out not to believe in everything you read on the internet. I wish you the best.

He didn't "figure out what was wrong with me." We discussed the pros and cons of the gut biome, I simply mentioned to you ailments I had vastly improved. It's advice, by the way. I'm surprised a doctor would spell that word wrong, but perhaps you're dyslexic; you do make an awful lot of simple spelling mistakes.

In the UK, as a doctor, it is almost considered 'part of the job' to be asked for your medical opinion outside of work or by random people. Literally every social event Flatus goes to, someone will find out he's a doc and then take their socks off and say, "I've got this big boil just here," etc. Nobody believes everything they read on the internet; that was a condescending remark, not an educated one. However, there is valuable and accurate scientific information out there.

I am not native english, in vocal or written. So pardon my imperfect spelling, but I hope you understand the meaning of what I write despite my imperfect spelling or gramma to me this is a forum and not an abstract. So excuse me for not bothering to correct.

Flatus sounds like a great person.

Regarding medical advice's I can only talk based on what the law is for me. I could lose my license for giving advices.
To give you a short example of why it is zero tolerance and considered not professional in general, pardon if my translation is bad:

A patient calls a doctor, whom is a personal friend - the patient has hurt he's hand because he's cat scratched him a few days ago. From what the patient descibes there is a small wound and it does not hurt so bad and the patient feels 'OK'. The doctor friend tell's him to clean it, just put a plaster on it and keep it relaxed. 2 days later the patient has passed away from tetanus.
-Had the doctor friend told the person to get it checked by he's own doctor, he's doctor would very likely had saved the mans life. The doctor would have had access to the man's medical history and would be aware he's tetanus vaccine was out dated and tested that the mans infection numbers, which would had been very high and the doctor would had sent the man to urgent treatment.

Just FYI the story is true. And just one in many reasons, why you should go see your own doctor when you need one.

What Flatus does in he's private time and how he is liable with he's job is none of my business. I can only speak for myself and only opinion based. Even if Flatus is a doctor, that does not mean either of us has to have the same opinion or legal obligations. Even recommendation in professional practise is very likely different. This can vary a mile from country to country.

In the case of this topic, my opinon is simply to disagree, not discredit.

I think you're maybe not reading properly. Flatus isn't providing medical advice, but it is totally legal for him to do so in the UK. He's offering dietary advice with additional reading material. The analogy of a cat scratch isn't quite relevant. A more fitting comparison would be a friend asking your opinion on the benefits of taking multivitamins, not asking you to guide them through DIY home liposuction with a broken Dyson.

In my ongoing quest to study the fundamentals of healthy human life, I have been studying dietary and supplemental nutrition in great depth. Medical School doesn’t teach doctors enough about ‘normal’ things in the body or about nutrition.

The microbiome is still one of the most important factors to manage, as discussed in this thread.

However, there are many other factors that can help us to live healthier, happier and longer lives.

Spermidine is one of these factors. The name comes from it being initially discovered in semen. But we now know it exists in most cells. It helps enhance autophagy, which is the process our bodies use to recycle old cells, removing old parts and clearing harmful waste. As we age, lots of substances, including Spermidine, decline. As a result our bodies can’t rejuvenate as well, leading to ‘aging’ and related diseases.

Increasing the consumption of Spermidine in our diets can keep our vital functions in a more youthful state, potentially increasing healthy life expectancy. Enhanced autophagy seems to be the main function, but there are other beneficial properties such as reduced inflammation.

To boost your levels, eating more vegetables and fruits can help. But the cheapest and most abundant source in terms of easily adding to your diet, is wheat germ. A heaped teaspoon twice a day or a tablespoon on your breakfast makes a significant difference. Wheat germ is easily available online and doesn’t cost much. Our microbiome also produces Spermidine as well as many other beneficial compounds, so increasing dietary fibre is also very good for overall health, disease reduction, improved mental health etc.

Here are a couple of resources which explain more detail…

For the nerds
Good post. There's always something new and exciting in nutrition science.

I am curious: What is your stance on egg yolks? They are probably the best source of choline, which is needed for neurotransmitter production in the brain. But some emerging studies have shown that it may be a possible carcinogen. Have you delved into this topic?

I’ve delved deep.

I don’t eat egg, meat, fish or whole dairy anymore. After completing Dr Greger’s ‘How Not To…’ series of books, The China Experiment and many other longevity and food science books.

I have 1/3 tsp of choline bitartrate each morning in a cocktail I make for longevity, fat burning and anti-inflammatory effects inc cider vinegar, ground ginger, turmeric, cumin and black seed. You have to chug it quick but it works.

I still use pure 90% whey isolate with no additives like sweeteners or emulsifiers as I body build. And the isolates don’t have much of the harmful stuff in.

Oh, okay. Sounds like you're a vegan. I was just wondering if you arrived at some conclusion on choline's association with cancer. I do take a few important supplements but I prefer to get things naturally if I can.

Also, shouldn't the possible carcinogenic effects of choline remain the same in your case or does the form of choline matter?

Oh, yeah.

Choline that is bound in animal protein can reach the large bowel. The microbiome can then convert it into TMAO (larger amounts in meat eaters).

TMAO is harmful in several ways, including increasing the risk of cancers and heart disease.

Having choline bitartrate alone is absorbed in the small bowel so isn’t harmful but you get the brain and memory benefits, and improved muscle strength and less fatigue.

Makes sense.

Um, one more question. Do you take omega 3? If so, then which form? (Triglyceride or the more flashy and expensive phospholipid bound forms?)

Yes I do, for mood boost rather than the other benefits.

I have high EPA stuff.

Hm. It doesn't list the form of omega 3 used, though. It's probably triglyceride (judging by the price). It's pretty good strength. I have the Sports Research one.
