I never understood the need for pain that self harmers have. I could see myself cutting my arm or leg up a little just for shits and giggles though.

I think self harmers associate mental pain with physical pain sometimes to get rid of the mental pain hurting yourself might drive them away from it for a while. A lot of self harmers hide their scars, but we all know the emo self harmer teens out there who do it purely for attention.

I never did much actual self-harm, just some clawing of my arms and hands when I got terribly frustrated/angry, would take it out on myself by clawing my skin or beating my legs, arms, hands, etc. I don't do that much anymore--I more or less have my mood swings under control.
