Venezuela use to be really prosperous and vibrant. Up untill the early 2000s when they said “no” to allowing the big American oil tycoons into their country. Instead they chose to do what they want with their oil. To control it and decide who gets it. America destroyed them with sanctions etc and the country slipped into what is because of that. Bush and Chaney pounded them dry

Yes, in a way. The US is protecting the buisness interests of ExxonMobil who have been extracting oil from the Stabroek Block offshore oil field in the Guyana-Suriname Basin which it began pumping in 2019.

After ExxonMobil made their deal with the government of Guyana to extract oil there (and pay Guyana substantial fees), Maduro claimed that most of the nation of Guyana was in fact part of Venezuelan and threatened to annex 3/4 of the country into Venezuela - including all of the Stabroek Block oil field that ExxonMobil is operating on.

Just to clarify - the oil money generated by ExxonMobil for Guyana has single handedly made Guyana and its population among the richest nations of South America overnight and accounts for the majority of their economic prosperity.

The most accurate historical parallel I can think of to compare this situation to is what Saddam did in the lead up to his invasion of Kuwait. He first claimed Kuwait and then invaded it. This lead to the first Gulf War and the subsequent US led coalition to liberate Kuwait through Operation Desert Storm.

It's therefore likely this current attack against Venezuela is based on a preemptive measure to secure US corporate interests in the area with the side issue of ensuring the continued sovereignty of Guyana.
