Maduro was expecting them to take him away. The operation itself was a propaganda maneuver.

- 35 Maduro personal guards were killed by US forces
- Maduro was injured trying to escape
- The videos show IGLA missiles launched by Venezuela forces in an attempt to stop the US incursion.

In addition, Maduro received at least 3 offers from the USA to leave the country, keep his freedom and his money, he rejected all 3, surely due to pressure from drug lords in his country.

Considering all that I don't think this was a show, I think Maduro played his only card trying to make the US believe that an incursion into Venezuela would cost many lives, and that simply wasn't the case. For Maduro, what happened was light years away from convenient and the same goes for the drug lords.
