I use the argument 'ok but what would have happened in Aus (or in your case Canada) was not colonised by the English. Let's say Cook sailed away and said to the King, "Yeah sire, it's a fucking long way away and good for nothing. I say leave it to the abos."The feathers (native indians) here are the same thing. No doubt, when the White man arrived their traditional way of living changed and often for the worse. That is just the reality of the world, there are winners and there are losers. Fucking deal with it, learn from it and move the fuck on.
