FYI Live Well, Fit and Happy- Dr Fart Tube’s Guide: Part 1- The Microbiome

so what do you think of probiotics then and what do you recommend?

I think they are very important to have, as well as a decent amount of pre-biotics to feed the probiotic bacteria. The research is really showing amazing things about how healthy microbiomes can reduce the risk of huge amounts of diseases, including cancers, and even improve many that are already established (eg dementia, ADHD, autoimmune diseases, depression, diabetes, obesity etc).

Inulin powder is the easiest way of getting more pre-biotics, having 2 teaspoons a day spread out. Foods like onions, beans and anything that makes you fart are pre-biotic rich.

I think the Bio-Kult pro-biotic capsules (the original is fine) are the best available in the UK and they have a USA site too so should be available to most people. The wider the range of good bacteria the better. I take one a day as well as a range of foods below.

Any bacteria fermented food such as kimchi or sour kraut, live yoghurts (best are the kefir types), pro-biotic drinks like Yakult, kombucha…

The fermented foods tend to have strong colony forming bacteria so don’t need to be eaten daily if you’re taking a probiotic capsule and having Inulin too.

so what do you recommend? a pre or pro biotic?

To paraphrase Frasier Crane, "This Is Dr Flatus Tube wishing you all good mental health".

I mentioned a while back I would create a thread of useful mind boosting supplements. In typical ADHD fashion, I haven’t done it yet.

I’ve spent the past month studying the microbiome (‘good bacteria’) as part of my mission to be as happy and healthy as possible. And fuck me, it’s seriously important. I’ve always been interested in the gut flora and keeping it healthy, but now have an understanding of really how important it is. I will move on to the other information about vitamins and supplements when I can, but looking at this thread first would maximise any further nutritional support anyway…

I can’t include all of the information here but I’ll document some of the most important bits. We really can feel mentally a lot better and physically much healthier by taking care of your good bacteria.

The microbiome has a major influence on our immune system and inflammation in our bodies, including modulating and even triggering autoimmune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancers and dementia (and many more).

An unhealthy microbiome can increase anxiety and depression via the gut brain axis (vagus nerve) and via inflammation of the brain, and can also make people put on extra fat leading to obesity. The are several reports of depression, fatigue, anxiety, ADHD symptoms etc being vastly improved after a microbiome boosting lifestyle change. Our gut makes more serotonin than our brains!

A healthy microbiome is needed for digestion of foods and production of essential fatty acids and vitamins. An unhealthy microbiome releases bad things into our body that reduce our immune system, make us feel tired/ depressed/ more anxious, gain body fat and increase our risk of cancer, diabetes, dementia, autoimmune disease, infections and many more.

It’s relatively easy to get your microbiome healthy. Eating a variety of healthy foods ensuring lots of fibre, minimising sugar, avoiding artificial sweeteners, less carbs/ more good fats, filtering water etc all help.

But I would suggest considering…

- get some Inulin powder (a prebiotic) and have a teaspoon twice a day dissolved in a drink (dissolves best in water 40C or higher). Prebiotics are food for the good bacteria and have the best evidence for health benefits.

- take a good pro-biotic with a broad range of bacteria. I take Bio-Kult original. Amazon have a good deal at the moment.

- eat pro-biotic foods regularly such as Kefir (there are many dairy free options now), kimchi, decent sour kraut, live yoghurts…

- have as wide a variety of healthy foods as you can to boost diversity of your little bowel dwelling friends.

The book Brain Maker by Dr David Perlmutter is very good, but I don’t agree with his view of autism specifically.

Here are a couple of decent TEDx talks.

If anyone is interested please feel free to ask questions, or take the piss. To ensure a bit of humour here is South Park and a scene from their microbiome episode (which is fucking awesome and a spoof of the original David Lynch Dune).

About the pro biotic foods...Lactose free is also OK to use????

Thank you for sharing this 👍🏻

They've arrived. Can i break open a tab and put one into my morning tea? I notice you said it works best in liquid 40 degree C.
I know i joke about having the mentality of a 15 yo, but i've always been about mental self-improvement. This thread should be stickied.

When i had that car collision, they were giving me huge amounts of anti-biotics. I caught MRSA in the hospital and it took 6 months of vancomycin to finally get rid of it. They even had to put a pic tube from my arm directly into my chest cavity. Bad got worse till it got better. No wonder i fell into depression, as it probably nuked all the good stuff in my stomach. Even now i need to take 4 amoxicillin tabs before any dental work.

🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔👍👍👍🤔🤔👍🤔

I started taking :

Garden Of Life -
MENS Critcal Daily Care ,
80Billion CFU .
A noticeable good change in my digestion. Gas has all but stopped. Very regular . And " clean bowel " movements.

This coming from a very tough critic.
Pricey. But worth it.

Excellent Advice FT. Hopefully our fellow members also get their blood pressure checked. Hypertension usually has no symptoms but is a major cause of premature death. Checking ur blood pressure is easy and sometimes fun.View attachment 611180
Ooohhh 💯!!! I found out my headaches and profuse sweating over nothing was my BP! Constantly 150-160/110+ !! I’m an RN as well 🤦🏻‍♀️. We never look after ourselves! Medicated now and still have a BP of 140+/90+ 😫

Fuck,i live with GERD,and the most painful thing,is when the vagus nerve is irritated, hurts so bad makes you wanna puke.

I have a friend who claims drinking apple cider vinegar, helps with acid reflux, but for,it made it worse.
💯 apple cider vinegar makes it worse 😂! It’s acidic

Did you get your pituitary hormones tested? LH, FSH, prolactin and thyroid function?

It’s a rare possibility that your symptoms could be hormone related.

However, I would suspect ADHD is more likely. Me and my whole family have ADHD and it’s a topic I have intensely studied over the past 2.5 years following my adult diagnosis. I can now predict whether someone has ADHD before I call them based on their past medical history which usually includes things like hypertension, headaches/ migraines, IBS, allergies/ asthma, anxiety, autoimmune illnesses (not necessarily all, but often several).

I’ve been on meds for high blood pressure since my mid twenties, and sweating and headaches are also common in those with ADHD as the physical body is just as active as the mind.

Thanks for the info FT. I'm going to try some of the Bio-kult you mentioned and the inulin powder. I've suffered from all sorts of GI issues all my life and have resorted to focusing on my gut health since all the doctors are at a loss for a diagnosis. I've been hesitant on the probiotics because I can't find a reputable one. Reviews always say the stomache acid will destroy the probiotics.

Yep had all the bloods. They’re fine. I have been diagnosed with ADHD at 33… so a year and a half ago. Added that to Anxiety Panic disorders, clinical depression and CPTSD. High BP only became a problem 2.5yrs ago and escalated at the end of last year… to 170/110 as a resting

Boom. Another super-powered nutter! 😂

I have found the nutritional support advised in the book ‘Finally Focused’ by James Greenblatt amazingly helpful. My wife and son (aged 11) also take the supplements advised. It’s all about increasing your fuel tank to allow your brain to race along without failing.

I also do a Wim Hof breathing exercise daily which is helpful.

PS, don’t worry too much about your BP. I was referred to a Professor of Blood Pressure by my GP because I was in my 20’s and my BP was around 180/110 most of the time. He was one of those bow tie wearing boffins and wasn’t that bothered about my long term risk as he said the evidence wasn’t concerning. It’s just drug company funded research driving guidance that makes doctors worry about it and insist on targets and medications.

yo @Flatus Tube muh nigga... you make house calls?
because im just wondering about that. being put on a regimen of some sort. getting off on the right foot so to speak.
maybe see a nutritionalist first, perhaps?

You could see a nutritionalist. They’d give better advice than most narrow-minded doctors.

The book Finally Focused, I mentioned above, by James Greenblatt is suitable for anyone who wants to boost brain function and mood. It’s aimed at ADHD but that doesn’t matter. The advice in the book is all about nutritional supplements to help the brain function at its best.

You’re always welcome to PM me if there’s any specific advice you want. As you know I am a nerd, and I’ve focused loads of energy on learning everything I can to feel the best I can. Blending my medical knowledge with geek learning.

my worry is when i start taking a prebiotic or probiotic, the side effect of them. because they can cause the runs or constipation for the first few days. i know each one is different also. not one are the same, but work the same as an end result. im not fond of the shits. i dont need to loose weight and im not always near a bathroom at work either.
and i appreciate the invite of a pm. :tu:
