Krasnopillya, Slavyansky district, Ukraine,
March 2023
In the Donetsk region, a Ukrainian volunteer group of 10 men, called the Black Tulips, or Collectors of Death, search for and recover the bodies/remains of KIA Russian soldiers to use as exchanges for the return by the Russians of KIA Ukrainian soldiers.
In this case they located a cellar that contained the bodies of two Russian soldiers who were likely killed early last summer during battle with Ukrainian troops after trying to occupy the village and before the Russian forces were pushed out. These two were reportedly killed when they took up position in the cellar and were then pelted with grenades. The two KIA remained in place when the Russians were eventually forced out of the village and area in Sept. 2022.
The Black Tulips catalogue any personal documents that bodies contain, personal belongings, military ID tags, etc. needed to identify recovered remains before exchanging them for Ukrainian KIA.
One of the members of this group stated that these two had decomposed to a point where "they almost didn't smell."
1. The entrance to the cellar had to be partially dug out before the bodies could be removed.
2.
3.
4. Both KIA soldiers were in an almost mummified state.
5.
6. Military ID tag and a cross. The bodies also contained 2,000 rubles along with St. George's ribbons (the black and orange ones that the Russians wear).
