It's the Freakiest Sheit! A Brain Stem Reflex! It's a Natural Reflex that happens when the Brain doesn't get enuff oxygen needed to Survive! It's not True Breathing! But Freaky as Fuck! Your basically a Goner at this Point! Bye Bye Now! Lol...SP

SP is spot on. The brainstem is made up of the midbrain, pons and medulla which then becomes the spinal cord (see picture). All mammals have a very similar brainstem with essentially identical functions. Humans have a much larger and more complex cerebral cortex which gives us our complex minds and higher level abilities. The brainstem is very primitive and sends impulses for survival as well as other things like pleasure (like the rush of dopamine warmth you get at the thought of doing something you really like or seeing someone you love). So survival impulses such as fight or flight, reproduce (sex), feed come from the brainstem and all mammals share these. In addicts the survival instincts are rewired in the brainstem to have the drug/ behaviour of choice in the top spot of the survival instincts- hence the cravings and inability to just stop.

Agonal breathing is a primitive reflex coming from the brainstem and is seen as the exaggerated movements that appear to be last breaths. We often see it here on GG. The mouth often opens in a definite but weird way and the shoulders/ upper back often move too. At this point the person is technically dead. Their cerebral cortex is no longer functioning and the heart has usually stopped beating in a life sustaining way. Agonal breaths can be seen long after death (I’ve seen it many times 30 mins after I have verified the patient’s death) and we have even seen it in decapitated heads like the anorexic looking soldier that was on here in the last couple of weeks.
