music The Carnyx: Music on the Iron Age Battlefield

Used by the Celts between 200 BCE and 200 CE, this wind instrument in the shape of an animal head was designed to intimidate opponents.

I can imagine how frightening it must have been to hear this back then—so sinister yet beautiful.

Imagine a massed body of warriors, hair combed with lime and bodies covered in woad tattoos, screaming curses until their voices cracked while this infernal instrument bayed.

Almost enough to send you back to your sunny vineyard by the Mediterranean and say, 'fuck those savages, they can have their swamps'. Almost 😎.

I'm guessing this is a replica piece and not an actual artifact being played? I reckon the real deal might even have some more resonance and vibe but it would be museum level stuff and probably couldn't have someone spit into it. I love ancient and classic instruments. :tu:

You're right. These were reconstructed in 1991 with the help of musicologist and historians
