Whats he wearing, Iron Cross 1st Class? Or 2nd class?
Iron Cross 2nd Class. It was normally worn sewn thru a buttonhole on the tunic, w/o the Medal. It was only worn WITH the Medal on the Day it was awarded. He probably got it awarded and never had time to sew the ribbon onto his tunic before he met his Fate. Also, the IC 2 was a prerequisite to being awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class- Although if an Action was of sufficient Merit, the IC 1 was often awarded WITH the IC 2, sort of a 'Given' that the soldier had clearly met the requirements to be Awarded BOTH Awards, and were then given at the same time.
